NSSF Declares Record 22.53% Interest for Savers

The National Social Security Fund (NSSF) will credit Shs5.44 trillion to members’ accounts after declaring a record interest rate of 22.53 per cent for the 2025/26 financial year.

Finance minister Henry Musasizi announced the rate at NSSF’s 14th Annual Members Meeting. It is the highest in the Fund’s 40-year history. Musasizi said the amount allocated to savers exceeds last year’s figure by about Shs2.64 trillion.

“It gives me pleasure to note the record-level performance of the Fund,” he said, crediting NSSF’s leadership for the results.

Managing director Patrick Ayota said NSSF’s total income rose by 85 per cent to Shs6.15 trillion. Member contributions grew by 14 per cent, from Shs2.13 trillion to Shs2.42 trillion.

The Fund paid Shs1.5 trillion in benefits to 50,499 members. It also reactivated 55,000 dormant accounts and enrolled 311,000 new savers, beating its target of 300,000.

NSSF has 3.6 million registered members, including about 2.7 million with account balances. Ayota said its strategy to 2035 aims to raise the number of savers to 15 million and grow its assets to Shs80 trillion. The Fund raised its asset target from Shs50 trillion after reviewing its growth.

During the year, NSSF invested Shs4.32 trillion in Uganda. Government bonds received 76 per cent of that amount, while shares in companies including MTN and Airtel received 18 per cent. The Fund has also invested more than Shs10 trillion in Kenya, Tanzania and Rwanda.
