The ongoing intelligence-led operation against the high wave of City robberies continues to yield fruits following the arrest of more notorious thugs.
Two suspects, Emma Onenchan and Denis Magusho, all former convicts are the latest to be rounded up.
According to police, ballistic evidence links the suspects to a couple of City robberies, including last week’s shooting of two mobile money operators at Zana.
Police Spokesperson Fred Enanga says the duo is also linked to the recent multiple shootings and robbery at Kimanya in Masaka, where they robbed a Toyota Harrier Reg.No.UBA 874W and later sold it to South Sudan.
They are also linked to a robbery in Nateete on May 14, where they shot dead a Kampala International University student (Raphael Walugembe), while they robbed a mobile money agent Denis Mwesigwa and his wife of Sh610, 000 and other valuables.
According to Enanga, among other incidents, the duo is believed to have been part of the group that raided Zana on June 10 and shot dead a mobile money agent, Harriet Nalwadda and her employee Maureen Nakabuubi, before taking off with Sh6million.
“The suspects were arrested while planning another robbery mission of a mobile money dealer in Mutukula. An additional gun, AK 47, was recovered bringing the total number of recovered guns to three,” Enanga said.
He added, “The guns were tested and the ballistic evidence tied the suspects to the three murders and five robberies after the recovered guns matched the shell casings exhibited by the police.” Enanga revealed that the police is still scrutinizing data from the several other shooting incidents dating back to January this year.
The latest arrest brings to three in total suspects in connection to City robberies this week. On Tuesday morning security raided a rented apartment believed to be inhabited by criminals in Kinonya Masanafu Zone in Kampala.
The raid resulted into a shootout with the robbers, although one of them Stanley Mulunda who happens to be the house owner was arrested while his colleague Richard Kasirye escaped. Two AK-47 rifles, 32 rounds of live ammunition and two magazines were recovered. Police also recovered a vehicle number plate UAM046J, a hammer, and court documents.
The suspects are being charged with a range of crimes, including three counts of murder, attempted murder, robbery and illegal possession of firearms.
