Police at Old Kampala are holding Pastor Augustine Iga of Revival Church Kawaala in Rubaga Division, Kampala over allegedly making false statements regarding covid-19 in Uganda.
According to Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson Patrick Onyango, the Pastor, commonly known as Abizzayo, in a video recording branded BBS TV reportedly claimed that Coronavirus is not in Uganda.
“The video that went viral undermines government efforts in fighting the covid-19 pandemic and exposes the public to dangers of laxity in observing the guidelines issued by the Ministry of Health on its control and prevention,”Onyango said in a statement.
He added that the pastor’s action promotes the virus spread and can “therefore be considered a direct attack on the people of the republic of Uganda.” Onyango further explains that the Pastor will be interrogated to establish the motive behind “the dangerous utterances.”
The KMP Spokesperson cautioned the public against “false and alarming utterances” concerning covid-19.
According to Ministry of Health, the number of people tested positive for covid-19 in Uganda, currently stands at 30. The cases have been increasing on a daily basis, ever since the first one a week ago.
Pastor Iga is the second “Man of God” arrested over covid-19. Last week Police arrested Pastor Rashid Mutebi of Blessed Feelings Church International situated in Gobe Kajjansi. He was netted together with 30 followers for defying the presidential directive suspending religious and other social gatherings to curtail Covid-19 spread.
