The ministry of education and sports said Monday that 54% of teachers in the country have got one dose of the Covid-19 vaccine, raising hope for re-opening of schools at the intended time.
“Teaching staff who have received their 1st dose of COVID-19 vaccination have increased from 269,445 (49 percent) 7 days ago to 296,614 (54 percent) as of 27th Sept. 2021,” the ministry announced Monday morning. “2nd dose recipients stand at 102,418 (19 percent).”
The government’s plan is to immunize all teacher and non-teaching staff, and 330,000 students aged 18 years and above before re-opening schools.
As per the president’s last week’s address, post-secondary institutions of learning will open on November 1 while the rest of the learning institutions will open in January 2022 if the above targets are met.
Uganda has so far acquired 5,129,243 doses of Covid-19 vaccines and less than 2 million have been used. Uganda's strategy is to vaccinate 22 million people, translating to 49.8% of the population.
The first phase will cover people with comorbidities that are 18 years and above, elderly aged 50 and above, health workers, teachers, and security personnel.
In the second phase, anyone 18 years and above will be immunized and, in the third phase, children below 18 will be immunized. To re-open businesses like bars and entertainment events, the president said that 4.8 million people in the priority population will have to be vaccinated.
The president directed all RDCs, CAOs and DHOs to carry out intensive mobilization for all eligible priority groups to go for vaccination.
