Makerere University has appointed Prof. Sarah Ssali as the First Deputy Vice-Chancellor in charge of Academic Affairs. The announcement was made by Vice-Chancellor Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe, who confirmed that the decision followed a recommendation by the University Council and Senate.

Prof. Ssali becomes the second woman in Makerere’s 100-year history to serve in this position. The appointment was approved by the University Chancellor, Dr. Crispus Kiyonga.

“I have the pleasure to inform all stakeholders and friends of Makerere University that, on the recommendation of Council and the Senate, the Chancellor, Dr. Crispus Kiyonga has appointed Prof. Sarah Ssali as the First Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic Affairs) of Makerere University,” Prof. Nawangwe announced.

He praised the appointment as a milestone, saying it reflects both merit and progress at Uganda’s oldest institution of higher learning. “Prof. Ssali becomes the second woman to hold this position in Makerere’s one hundred years. Please join me in congratulating Prof. Ssali on a well-deserved appointment,” he added.

Prof. Ssali, a seasoned academic and researcher, now takes on a key leadership role that will shape the academic direction of the university. Many academicians have also noted that her appointment a key step in strengthening gender representation at top management levels of Makerere University.
