Weeks after the Senior Presidential Advisor on Special Operations Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba had a joint tour of dilapidated Kampala roads with the KCCA Executive Director, work has finally begun to rehabilitate the industrial area roads.

This is great news for the numerous factories situated in the industrial area, as heavy trucks often ply the 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th streets. Thanks to funding from the African Development Bank (ADB), these roads will undergo a major overhaul to improve their condition.

KCCA has warned motorists of the temporary inconveniences that may arise from the road works although they have been told that the inconvenience will be short-lived.

Currently, work is in progress along 5th street in the industrial area, where forward maintenance is being carried out. This is just one part of the larger Kampala City Roads Rehabilitation Project (KCRRP), specifically under Lot 3.

Under Lot 3, several roads and junctions in ‘Kampala Smart City’ will be reconstructed and upgraded. According to KCCA, this includes the critically important 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th (Namuwongo) streets, as well as Sir Apollo Kaggwa, Muzito, Ssuna 1 and Ssuna 2 roads. Additionally, the Kabalagala Junction will be upgraded.

To ensure a smooth flow of traffic during the construction process, motorists are advised to approach 5th street with patience or consider using alternative routes to avoid potential delays.

Background

On May 10, Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba held a meeting with the Kampala Capital City Authority Executive Director whithin which the UPDF General was briefed about the state of the roads and general infrastricture.

The KCCA ED, Ms Dorothy Kisaka who was flanked by her engineers told the General about the ongoing projects aimed at transforming the face of Uganda’s Capital.

Gen Kainerugaba was then guided on a tour of some of the roads in industrial area where the works have now started. The General who took a walk through the sixth and seventh streets was accompanied by a leading engineer from the UPDF engineering brigade.

Gen Kainerugaba got a first hand experience of the drainage channels, potholes that several Kampala dwellers have been complaining about on social media.

During the tour, the KCCA ED thanked Gen Kainerugaba for his courtesy visit and concern and expressed optimism that the General, in his capacity as Presidential Advisor would support KCCA efforts in revamping the road network in Kampala.

Indeed, the fruits of the General’s visit will soon be enjoyed by the millions of motorists in Kampala.
