Uganda's Competency Based Assessment Model: A Blueprint for Malawi
The Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) and the National Curriculum Development Centre (NCDC) have showcased the country's strides in implementing Competency-Based Assessment (CBA) under the New Lower Secondary Curriculum (NLSC) to a delegation from the Malawi Institute of Education.
The Malawi delegation, impressed by Uganda's progress, visited the country to benchmark the implementation of CBA in preparation for their own curricular reforms. Malawi is in the early stages of implementation Curriculum and assessment reforms.
The UNEB team, led by Director of Examinations Mr. Nangosya Mike Masikye, represented the Executive Director Mr. Dan N. Odongo.
UNEB and NCDC emphasized the close collaboration that has been instrumental in the successful implementation of CBA.
"From the initial conception of assessment reforms, UNEB and NCDC have worked hand-in-hand to ensure that all assessments align with the curriculum," stated a representative from NCDC.
The UNEB team highlighted key processes undertaken so far, including the development of an assessment framework, pretesting of test items, creation of a digital data collection tool (AMIS), training of teachers in continuous assessment, and extensive stakeholder engagement.
UNEB is poised to assess the first cohort of candidates under CBA this October, 2024. Mr. Nangosya assured the Malawi delegation that despite challenges, the Board is prepared to deliver on this significant milestone.
