Christopher Buyera, a candidate contesting in the NRM Eastern Vice Chairperson race has stepped down just hours to the Thursday polls.

Buyera who hails from Mbale district told Kampala Post website that he has decided to step down from the NRM CEC race after meeting Party Chairperson President Yoweri Museveni and NRM Secretary General Justine Lumumba.

“Yes it is true I have stepped down from the race. I had a discussion with the Party Chairperson and Party SG and asked me pull out of the race so that I can serve the Party in another capacity,” Buyera said when contacted.

The youthful Buyera said that his candidature was based on promoting the NRM Party agenda that includes campaigning for President Museveni and other NRM flag bearers.

“So the SG asked me to continue mobilizing and promoting the interests of the NRM Party in another capacity. I gladly welcomed the idea and subsequently stepped down from the race,” Buyera added.

He said that he is now campaigning for Capt Mike Mukula to retain the NRM Eastern Vice chairperson seat.

“I entered in the race, not to fight Capt Mukula, but to continue from where he had stopped because he has surely done a lot of good work for the Party. Whereas I agree that all the candidates in the race are competent, I will rally behind Mukula because he is tested and has proved to be the best candidate in the race,” he said.

The race for NRM Vice chairperson, Eastern region is now left with three candidates vying for the top NRM post. The other candidature contesting against Mukula are former Tororo Municipality MP Sanjay Tanna and Kumi’s Harriet Akello.
