In Sheema North constituency, three candidates are facing off in the race to choose the NRM flag-bearer in the coming elections. The contenders are Dr Arthur Mugisha, the incumbent Naome Kibaaju and Didas Tabora.

To step up the game, Dr. Arthur Mugisha is injecting money into women’s groups that are involved in business. One of such groups named Buringo Community Development group received Shs3 million. Its chairperson, Juliet Katushabe, says they are running a skilling program that has attracted more than 100 women in the district.

These women have been trained to make items like candles, soap, fibre bags and others from their homes. Each group is comprised of ten members far they’ve covered twenty groups, according to Katushabe.

Furthermore, Dr. Mugisha says he wants to help improve service delivery in Sheema North by assessing the area problems and presenting them to parliament. “I have found there is no coordination in extending service delivery to the people of Sheema district because most of our leaders are not bothered,” he says, adding that the constituency is still grappling with basics like water scarcity.

Citing the Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBO) data, he said only 18% of people in Sheema North have safe water for drinking, with 82% left with no access to safe water. On the side of electricity, 20% have access to hydroelectricity while 80% do not have access to the grid.

“I will dedicate myself and time which is a precious resource that I have in my life to implement the government programs in Sheema North,” he says. Speaking during the virtual National Executive Council, President Museveni urged members of the NRM not to look at politics as a career but mission-led service to the people.

"The NRM needs to expunge the politics of careerism and re-instate the politics of mission-led leadership. It is not just the: ‘who’. It is, first and foremost, the: ‘what’? What is to be done for 11 Uganda’s salvation, for Africa’s salvation?’ Once you remind yourself that the ‘what’ in the case of NRM, means the 4 ideological principles: Patriotism, Pan Africanism, social-economic transformation and democracy, then, it is easier for you to decide on the ‘who’. Who is it that seems to understand and adhere to the three principles?” the president said.

“Do not intimidate, do not assault, do not insult, do not bribe, but persuade by explaining and exhibiting good conduct. Let your light so shine before men, that they see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven, it says in the Book of Mathew, Chapter 5, Verse 15- 16. Influence by explanation and good examples and not by intimidation, assaulting, insulting, manipulating or bribing.”

According to the NRM electoral roadmap, primary elections to pick MPs will be held on Sept. 4.
