Former Kampala Mayor Nasser Ntege Ssebagala has died. According to reports, he had been admitted at International Hospital Kampala where he was undergoing treatment for a yet to be named illness.
It is however reported that Ssebagala was admitted at Kampala International Hospital (IHK) about two weeks ago after he reportedly fell in his bathroom. It is believed that he suffered a stroke while taking a shower.
The 72-year-old businessman was mayor of Kampala from 1998 to 2011 and he had expressed in running in the coming elections for the same seat.
In 2006, Ntege Ssebagala had also expressed interest in running for the presidency as an independent candidate but later dropped out of the race.
Ssebagala owned several businesses in Kampala and most of his time as a politician he was a Democratic Party-leaning candidate.
Veteran journalist and businessman Andrew Mwenda eulogized the former mayor as a down to earth politician.
"My heartfelt condolences go to the family of former Kampala Mayor, Al Hajji Nasser Ntege Sebagala, a man who excited our country with his down to earth politics: he spoke the English the ordinary person on the streets of Kampala could relate to, did things that ordinary people do," said Mr. Mwenda in a tweet.
Ssebagala's death comes after his wife Gera Mosha's death in 2017. Mosha was the proprietor of Bon Appetit chain of restaurants in Kampala.
Mosha died after battling Pancreatic Cancer after trips to South Africa and America for treatment.
