118 MP candidates nominated in Kampala, Wakiso on day one

The Electoral Commission (EC) says 118 aspirants in the race to represent their constituencies parliament were nominated on the first day in Kampala and Wakiso districts.

“In Kampala Capital City, a total of sixty-five candidates were successfully nominated by the close of day one, to contest for Directly Elected Member of Parliament for the nine constituencies in the City. Seven (7) female candidates were nominated to contest for the Kampala City Woman Representative to Parliament,” the Commission said in a news release.

“Wakiso District had forty-one (41) candidates successfully nominated for Directly Elected Member of Parliament and five candidates nominated to contest for the seat of District Woman Member of Parliament.” The exercise, which is being conducted at nomination centers in all the 146 districts and cities across the country, is to be concluded today.

The Commission is conducting the nomination of candidates to contest for the three hundred and fifty-three (353) constituencies for Directly-elected Members of Parliament and the one hundred and forty-six (146) seats for District Woman Representative to Parliament.

Each parliamentary candidate pays Shs3 million nomination fees and submits academic papers with a minimum qualification of Senior Six certificate or its equivalent.

Some of the candidates that were nominated in Kampala include Faridah Nambi (Kampala Woman MP), Ken Lukyamuzi (Rubaga South) Beti Kamya (Lubaga North), and Cedric Babu Ndilima (Kampala Central).

Independent candidates must ensure that they have allocated symbols before leaving the nomination venue. This will be done by candidates signing against the selected symbol.
