The newly elected Speaker of the 11th Parliament, Jacob Oulanyah has promised to respect and treat all views from MPs with fairness and tolerance.
Oulanyah said this after being elected as Speaker in a secret ballot election where he beat incumbent Rebecca Kadaga for the coverted top legislative seat.
"We should agree that no view will be suppressed. All views will be received with tolerance and given fair treatment based on known facts and reason. We must pledge to overrule intolerance," Oulanyah said.
He said that in order for the 11th Parliament to successfully carry out its constitutional mandate, they need to adopt some guiding principles on how to "effectively deliver on the bigger purpose of the Parliament in its service to the people."
"We should agree, from the onset, that we will lay facts on the table and use them as a reference point when expressing, sometimes divergent opinions. We must apply an evidence-based process of decision making," he said, adding that members should endeavor to use reason and sound logic in tabling their positions.
He called upon Members to have a collective responsibility to work together harmoniously.
