The Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries, has embarked on the process of registration of all fishers on Ugandan water bodies.
According to Hellen Adoa, the Minister of State for Fisheries, the decision to register all fishers was derived from a meeting that took place on 23th August 2021 at Kajjansi Aquaculture Research Station between officials from the Ministry and Members of Parliament from fishing communities.
Adoa said that registration of fishers is for effective planning and support. She has instructed all District Fisheries Officers to ensure that all fishers in the Districts are registered and lists should be verified by the district Taskforce composed of CAO, RDC, LCV, DFO and FPU sector commander.
"The fishers to be registered should cover all the major water bodies to start with Victoria, Kyoga, Albert, Edward, George, Victoria Nile and Albert Nile.
In 2018, government through the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries, issued a directive to register all boat owners in the country, upon meeting the set standards in a move aimed at regulating illegal fishing activities and conserving Uganda’s water bodies
