The Senior Presidential Advisor for Special Operations Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba has announced the appointment of veteran journalist Mr Andrew Mwenda as the official spokesperson of the 'MK Movement'.

In a tweet Thursday morning Gen Kainerugaba said all official communications of the MK Movement will go through Mr Mwenda's new office.

"I'm happy to announce that Mr.Andrew Mwenda is the official spokesperson for the MK Army/Movement. All our statements will go through his office," Gen Kainerugaba said in the tweet.

Mr Mwenda has been a close associate of Gen Kainerugaba for close to thirty years and the veteran journalist has participated in several public and private engagements with the General, the most recent being a visit to Kigali where the two held several meetings with the Rwandan President, Paul Kagame. Mr Mwenda also accompanied the General as he visited General Salim Saleh in December among others.

It is also widely understood that Mr Mwenda has been carrying out some assignments on behalf of the General before today's announcement.

The MK Movement

Several groups have emerged around the country and have been calling for Gen Kainerugaba's retirement from the army so that he can participate in Uganda's elective politics ahead of the 2026 elections.

Relatedly, in recent times, Gen Kainerugaba has made strong statements against the ruling NRM party, noting in one of his tweets that it is one of the most reactionary organisations in the country.

As a result, some elderly NRM leaders such as Kahinda Otafiire who is mostly known for his Parliamentary Election defeat to a little known Donozio Kahonda and others have responded by insisting that Gen Kainerugaba will be defeated.

It remains to be seen how the politics ahead of the 2026 polls will play out as Gen Kainerugaba continues to make it clear that he intends to run for the presidency at some point in the near future.
