The Electoral Commission of Uganda has launched the construction of its new permanent headquarters in Lubowa-Lweza, Wakiso District, a milestone in the country's democratic progress and institutional strengthening.
The groundbreaking ceremony, held on July 30, was officiated by the Prime Minister of Uganda, Robinah Nabbanja, who described the project as a significant boost to the country's electoral infrastructure. “This is a historic moment for the country’s electoral infrastructure and democracy,” Nabbanja said.
The new complex will house purpose-built office spaces, storage facilities, warehousing, and an integrated ICT system to support the Commission’s operations. The facility aims to centralize electoral services, improving efficiency, transparency, and accessibility across Uganda.
Construction of the facility will be undertaken by the National Housing and Construction Company Ltd with full support from the Government of Uganda.
“This groundbreaking ceremony is testimony to the commitment of the Government of Uganda to support the democratic processes in the country through developing the capacity of institutions to deliver their respective mandates,” Nabbanja added.
She also commended the Electoral Commission for taking the initiative under the guidance of President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni.
“I congratulate the Electoral Commission under the wise guidance of H.E. President Kaguta Museveni on the idea of constructing the new complex that will be the first of its kind in Africa,” Nabbanja said, noting that the headquarters will feature an extensive array of integrated facilities aimed at transforming Uganda’s electoral management system.
The Commission says the development reflects its mission to enhance service delivery and strengthen its institutional framework as the country prepares for upcoming elections.
