The restoration of total peace in Karamoja by the UPDF and joint security forces has sparked an economic boom, paving the way for the new Kidepo International Airport, local factories, and thriving wildlife tourism.

A major joint security operation has successfully restored stability in North Karamoja. This development is driving rapid economic growth and boosting regional tourism.

The massive security turnaround has unlocked significant development across the sub-region. The area is now witnessing the construction of Kidepo International Airport in Karenga District. New factories are also opening up across Karamoja to create jobs for local residents.

The Commander of the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) 3 Infantry Division, Major General Wilberforce Sserunkuma, announced these major achievements during a regional security meeting in Karenga District. He highly commended the security agencies for their collective dedication to maintaining peace.

“The peace dividends are already evident. Today, we are witnessing the establishment of Kidepo International Airport in Karenga District, new factories across Karamoja, and tremendous growth in tourism. This is all because of our collective effort, discipline, and dedication to serving our government. We must protect and consolidate these gains,” Major General Sserunkuma said.

The army commander called for enhanced cooperation among all security organs to eliminate criminal activity before it occurs.

“I implore you to be proactive rather than reactive. You must detect insecurity before it happens as a deterrent measure. We cannot afford to lose the peace we have achieved. Stay ahead of the criminals,” he urged.

Major General Sserunkuma directed all field commanders to heavily protect government development programmes from any form of disruption. He noted that the secure environment has greatly elevated the global profile of Kidepo Valley National Park. The wildlife park continues to attract international tourists and generate vital revenue.

The commander also stressed the absolute importance of building strong partnerships with local community leaders. These local relationships remain critical to understanding security dynamics under the ongoing Operation Usalama Kwa Wote.

The high-level meeting brought together several senior security chiefs. The attendees included the Commander of 405 Brigade, Col Ruziro Nuwagaba, and Karenga District Police Commander, AIP Manana Martin. The Kidepo ASTU Commander, SP Muyonjo Nicholas, and the Commanding Officer 47 Battalion, Maj Apollo O Okema, also participated alongside officers from the Uganda Police Force.
