Police have launched the electronic Express Penalty Scheme in which new portable electronic machines and printers will replace receipt books.
The scheme was launched on Monday by Deputy Inspector General of Police, Maj Gen Sabiiti Muzeyi, who noted that the new system will help encourage transparency as well as easily crack down on defaulters.
The system will require offenders to instantly pay fines at the point of arrest, while details of the issuing officers will also be captured in the system. Maj Gen Sabiiti said this will help in supervising the officers.
A total of 1400 traffic officers have been trained to use the new system. Using the new system, traffic police officers issue and print receipts to offenders.
Defaulters can also be tracked using the system because driving permit numbers and number plates of vehicles are captured by the system.
