One person died on the spot while eight others are hospitalized following an explosion in Mabanda Trading Centre, Matugga in Wakiso district.
Deputy Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire says the explosion went off at around 3pm on Saturday as a group of scrap dealers were cutting a piece of metal.
Owoyesigyire says the matter is being investigated. “Our team of experts are at the scene trying to analyze the exact cause of the explosion and also give feedback about it,” he said.
The deceased have been identified as Abdul Igga, aged 23, a welder in Mabanda trading centre, while the injured are; Rodgers Matovu , a bodaboda cyclist from Bombo, Moreen Nimbabazi also of Bombo and Gerald Kajubi from Matugga.
Others are Rashid Mukasoma, Fatuma Nantongo, Namulibwa, Galiwango and Ssalongo. They were rushed to Mulago Hospital after sustaining severe injuries.The Mabanda explosion comes barely a week after another one in a Sauna in Naalya which left five people injured.
