Police Prohibit Alcohol, Narcotics at New Year Fireworks Display Sites

The police have directed territorial commanders to ensure that Ugandans strictly follow stipulated guidelines in display of fireworks to welcome the New Year 2020.

Six companies have been licensed to display fireworks in 1104 venues across the country. The licensed companies  include; M/S Sky Flames {U] Ltd, M/S Quality Lighting [U} Ltd, M/S Extremes Events {U} Ltd, M/S Tomil Fireworks {U} Limited, M/S Goshen Africa {U} Ltd, And M/S Africa {U} Ltd.

Among other guidelines, territorial commanders have been directed to review and approve the location of proposed fireworks discharge sites in close coordination with the licensed companies and also “provide supervision and guidance to fireworks operators, prior to setting up the display, during discharge, of fireworks and after discharge to assist in determining that the launch area is safe.”

“At their discretion, they shall have the authority to suspend or terminate the display due to weather or any other grounds deemed unsafe. The fireworks display contractor, shall be required to conduct an onsite safety assessment,” Police Spokesperson Fred Enanga said in a statement.

He added that  the fireworks operator will be required “to supply 10 fire extinguishers properly tagged and functioning.” Aerial displays shall not include free floating devices or shells, less than 3 inches in diameters.

“Prohibit persons who are under the influence of alcohol, narcotics or medications that could adversely affect judgment, mobility or stability,” he emphasized.

People world over will on the night of December 31, 2019 to January 1, 2020 celebrate end of the year and welcome the new one. The celebrations will among others include prayers, fireworks display and partying all night long.
