Bank of Uganda has disregarded false and malicious social media stories that Governor Emmanuel Mutebile is dead.

In a statement issued by Charity Mugumya, Director Communications, Bank of Uganda, Mutebile "was unwell" but is now steadily recovering at Nakasero Hospital.

"Governor was unwell. His doctors attended to him and he is currently recovering very well," Mugumya said amidst rumors that Mutebile is dead.

In a separate statement issued on Wednesday, Dr. Adam Mugume, EDR, BoU said that Prof. Mutebile sought sick leave last week on Mar 25, 2020, and has been receiving treatment in a Ugandan medical facility.

"He is receiving treatment in a Ugandan medical facility and will resume duty as soon as he has recuperated. Strongly disregard the false and malicious stories of his passing," Mugume said.

According to sources, Mutebile was last night able to sit and eat porridge, an indicator of steady recovery.

Apparently, he was to be flown to Germany for treatment, but efforts turned futile as the globe grapples to contain the deadly Coronavirus which has already claimed over 40,000 lives.
