State Minister for ICT Peter Ogwang has ordered that all residents of Katwe in Makindye Division benefit from the government food relief.

Ogwang was last week assigned by the President to coordinate the distribution of food items in Makindye Division which started on Sunday.

On Tuesday morning, Ogwang flanked by UPDF officers and LDUs camped at Katwe 1 playground as early as 7am in preparation to distribute food to vulnerable people. Ogwang said that he had observed that most of the residents of Katwe were living in poverty and thus, declared that all of them should be given relief.

“I have been interacting with the people of Katwe and realized that majority of them are actually vulnerable and need this food. So I have ordered my people to give everybody in Katwe food for as long as they find them in their residences,” Ogwang said, adding that the distribution had delayed because of shortage of beans.

“The shortage of beans has been sorted now and we hope that by end of business today, we shall conclude the distribution of food in Katwe 1 and Katwe 2 then tomorrow we go to other areas,” he said.

Leaders from Makindye applauded the leadership of Minister Ogwang and are hopeful that the exercise will go on smoothly.

“Despite many of us being in the opposition, we have been working very well with the Minister [Peter Ogwang]. We meet every morning with him, the mayor, RCC, GISO and other local leaders to plan for the day. So far, the only problem we have faced is the shortage of beans, but this is a matter we shall handle as a team. There was also an issue of the army leaving out some residents, but the matter has now been sorted,” Makindye Division Mayor Kasirye Nganda Mulyanyama said.

He added, “We realized that many people are in need of this food and for us here in Makindye, we are no longer looking at vulnerability, we are giving everyone food for as long as we find you in your residences and you are identified by the area chairperson.”
