Former Prime Minister Ruhakana Rugunda has said he’s still “committed to supporting” President Yoweri Museveni and the NRM government despite being dropped from the cabinet.
Dr. Rugunda, who had been prime minister since 2014, was replaced by Robinah Nabbanja. In a series of tweets, the ex-premier hailed President Museveni for the “opportunity he gave me to serve Uganda as Prime Minister”.
Rugunda will now serve as a special envoy for special duties in the office of the president.
According to Dr. Ruhakana Rugunda, “there is still work to do to realize a transformed Uganda and a secure and better Africa.”
Because of that, he went on, “this requires all of us to join hands, in order to achieve this goal, under the able leadership of” President Museveni.
A medical doctor by profession, Rugunda has served the NRM government in different capacities since 1986.
As a minister, for instance, he has been posted to Works, Transport and Communication (1988-1994), Foreign Affairs (1994-1996), Information (1996-1998), Presidency (1998-2001), Water, Lands and Environment (2001-2003), and Internal Affairs (2003-2009).
