Uganda’s High Commissioner to South Africa, Barbara Oundo Nekesa, on Tuesday chaired the 12th Ordinary Session of the East African Community (EAC) Group in Southern Africa at the Sheraton Pretoria Hotel.

In the session, the Heads of Missions shared reports on the trends of social, economic, political and COVID-19 developments in their respective capitals and across the Eastern Africa Region.

The issues that were discussed include the inauguration of Uganda Airlines’ direct route from Entebbe to Johannesburg, the signing of the EACOP, the negotiations around the second filling of the GERD, the security situation of the Tigray region in Ethiopia, and Mauritius’ offer of 100 scholarships to the African continent per year.

They also looked into the status of Covid-19 in their respective countries, the status of implementing the peace agreement in South Sudan, the untimely demise of former Prime Minister and President of Mauritius, Sir. Anerood Jugnauth, the re-election of President Museveni and formation of his new government.

Amb. Nekesa thanked the Dean of the group for the good stewardship he has offered and urged the group to stick together for the continued progress and transformation of the Eastern Africa Region.

The group reiterated the need to continue sharing and exchanging information and ideas on progressively harnessing regional cooperation and development.

At the end of the meeting, Nekesa took the opportunity and informed the meeting of her new appointment as the National Treasurer for Uganda’s ruling party, the NRM.
