The Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development has cautioned Ugandans against fraudsters that are exploiting the desperation occasioned by the Covid-19 lockdown to execute scams.
The ministry says one such scheme is a web-based link circulating on different social media platforms calling on the public to register for the "Government COVID-19 Support grant".
When you click on the link, it takes you to a website that promises payments within 24 Hours of purported approval.
The ministry says it’s already working with different stakeholders to develop a plan on supporting people that have been subjected to misery by the pandemic.
“The Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development under the National Multi-sectoral COVID Taskforce chaired by the Rt. Hon. Prime Minister is finalizing the process of identification of categories of persons that will be considered for Government support and will soon advise the public accordingly,” reads a Tuesday statement from the ministry.
The Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja has said this year the government will wire money to vulnerable groups instead of sending food.
The government is yet to communicate the amount that will be sent.
