President Yoweri Museveni described former presidential candidate Aggrey Awori as a “distinguished leader” in his tribute posted on Twitter Wednesday afternoon.

Museveni, who said he was “saddened by “Awori’s untimely demise”, noted that “talented sportsman” had “joined me in the NRM to serve the country despite our prior political differences.”

In 2001, Aggrey Awori was among the candidates that raced against Museveni and he scored 1.41%, coming in the third position.

An outspoken member of the Uganda People’s Congress (UPC), he represented Samia-Bugwe North Parliament from 2001 until 2006, before crossing to the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM), where he would be appointed Minister for Information & Communications Technology and serve from 2009 to 27 May 2011.

Awori will also be remembered for becoming the first local director of Uganda Television (UTV) in1967.

He died on Monday private hospital in Naalya, Kampala.
