Police in Old Kampala have launched an investigation into a cash robbery reported on 19 November, Kampala Metropolitan Police Deputy Public Relations Officer, ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, has confirmed.
Preliminary findings reveal that two G4S security guards, tasked with transporting cash from Lubowa to Nakasero, are suspected of conspiring to steal from the bullion van, registration number UAJ 199T. The van was later found abandoned in Nabunya, Rubaga Division, along with two rifles.
According to the security company, the stolen cash amounted to Shs1,069,420,000 and USD 14,474 (about Shs53,467,462).
On Monday, Owoyesigyire stated that police swiftly began investigations, leading to the arrest of one suspect, Ambrose Richard Otim, in Kwania District. Otim was found in possession of Shs117 million, believed to be part of the stolen funds.
“Investigations are ongoing, and more details will be shared as soon as they are available,” Owoyesigyire said, assuring the public that efforts are underway to recover the remaining money and hold those responsible accountable.
