Wazalendo Savings and Credit Cooperative Society (WSACCO) has partnered with the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) to support the growth of SACCOs in the Greater Masaka region as part of the Army Week activities.
Launching a training and experience-sharing program at PEWOSA SACCO in Kabula, Lyantonde District, WSACCO Chief Executive Officer Brig Gen Joseph Freddy Onata emphasized the initiative's goal of strengthening financial cooperatives.
“The purpose of this training is to share best practices in SACCO management with other SACCO leaders, helping them build confidence to mobilize their members, encourage saving, accumulate capital, and run sustainable SACCOs,” Brig Gen Onata said.
Beyond training, WSACCO donated textbooks and reusable sanitary towels to support education and improve school retention rates.
Lyantonde District LC5 Chairman Byamuhangi Fred commended the UPDF for fostering a strong relationship with civilians.
“It is a great opportunity for Lyantonde SACCOs to interact with military officers on welfare matters. I hope this engagement will benefit other SACCOs, improving their financial management and overall performance,” he said.
Rev. Ben Katunguka, representing the PEWOSA Board of Directors, noted that the training covered critical areas such as savings mobilization, diversifying revenue streams, and member education.
The SACCO training program extends to several districts, including Sembabule, Lwengo, Bukomansimbi, Kalungu, Kalangala, Kyotera, Rakai, and Masaka City.
The WSACCO training team includes Corporate Communications Manager Lt Col Akasius Mbabaisi, Head of Information and Security Maj Livingstone Musiime, among others.
