President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has launched BENNI Foods, a dairy processing factory in Kiruhura District to boost the region’s agricultural sector.

Located on Kaguta Road, the factory aims to address the challenge of excess milk production while creating jobs for the local community.

In his remarks, President Museveni welcomed the investment, emphasizing Uganda’s potential for increased milk production.

“You are most welcome; you are in the right place at the right time. We have big potential here, and once the farmers are sensitized on how to properly care for their cows, we can produce more milk than we do now,” he said.

He commended the people of Ankole for adopting modern dairy farming and embracing the government’s guidance on settlement and livestock management.

“When we came here, we spoke to the elders, and I am glad that they took our advice to settle in one place. When we introduced dairy farming, they welcomed it,” he noted.

The President urged farmers to prioritize their cattle’s health by planting sufficient pasture. He warned that poor feeding conditions were forcing cows to use their teeth instead of their tongues to graze.

“Normally, cows use their tongues to harvest grass, but now they are using their teeth because the grass is short,” he observed.

To further support dairy farmers, he promised to provide a dedicated power line for the factory and explore additional measures to address energy challenges.

Museveni also encouraged farmers to work with the Ministry of Agriculture to acquire improved cattle breeds that could produce up to 30 liters of milk daily, compared to the current five liters. He highlighted ongoing research into a tick vaccine as a long-term solution for livestock health.

“We have a solution for all problems of cattle,” he assured, explaining that the vaccine would kill ticks upon biting the animals.

Vice President Jessica Alupo lauded President Museveni’s leadership, crediting his policies for attracting investors.

“This is possible because of the peace and security you have ensured in the country,” she said.

BENNI Foods CEO Jitendra reaffirmed the company’s commitment to enhancing milk production in the region.

“The factory aims to help local farmers produce more milk than the 100 liters we consume each day,” he stated.

The factory currently employs 73 youths, with more jobs expected as operations expand.

The launch of BENNI Foods is a significant milestone in Uganda’s industrialization efforts, promising better incomes for farmers, job creation, and a boost to the dairy sector.
