President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has commended the progress of Hoima City Stadium construction, reaffirming the government’s commitment to expanding sports infrastructure ahead of AFCON 2027.

Speaking during an inspection visit in Hoima City on March 19, 2025, the President, accompanied by First Lady and Minister of Education and Sports, Janet Museveni, emphasized the importance of modern sports facilities in boosting Uganda’s competitiveness.

“Uganda has a rich sporting history, but for years, investment in sports facilities was hindered by economic challenges. Apart from Namboole and Nakivubo, we had done little in stadium development. Now, the tide is turning,” he said.

He highlighted the urgent need to upgrade sports, tourism, and hospitality infrastructure, noting that Uganda’s co-hosting of AFCON 2027 presents a key opportunity.

Government to Boost Sports and Tourism

President Museveni pledged government support in expanding Hoima’s hospitality industry, urging the private sector to invest in hotels to accommodate the influx of visitors expected during the tournament.

He also announced plans to upgrade Akii-Bua Stadium and transform Gulu Airport into an international facility, enhancing regional connectivity.

The Vice President, Jessica Alupo, stressed the impact of sports on Uganda’s global reputation, saying modern stadiums would provide better training facilities for athletes and raise the country's competitiveness.

The Prime Minister, Robinah Nabbanja, reaffirmed Uganda’s readiness for AFCON 2027, describing Hoima City Stadium as a game-changer for the region.

“Beyond football, this stadium will be a hub for youth development, nurturing talent, and creating jobs. The construction has already benefited Hoima’s economy through job creation and business opportunities,” she said.

First Lady Applauds Progress

Janet Museveni expressed satisfaction with the progress, praising SUMMA, the construction company, for its efficiency.

“I am happy to see the tremendous progress achieved in just seven months since construction began in September 2024. I also appreciate Hon. Peter Ogwang and the local leadership for their dedication to ensuring the success of this project,” she said.

She noted that her Inter-Ministerial Forum has been coordinating Uganda’s preparations for CHAN 2024 and AFCON 2027, addressing areas beyond the education and sports sector.

She further acknowledged key contributors to the stadium project, including the late Dr. James Rujumba, who donated 10 acres of land, and the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA), which contributed another 10 acres. The government purchased an additional 22 acres, bringing the total land for the stadium complex to 42 acres.

“This facility will add great value to Uganda’s sports development. I also appreciate SUMMA for creating jobs, with 80 percent of the 900 workers on-site being Ugandans,” she added.

SUMMA Pledges Quality Delivery

Murat Altun, the project manager for SUMMA, assured stakeholders that the company was committed to delivering a world-class stadium on schedule. He praised the support of President Museveni and the First Lady, saying their leadership was key to the project’s success.
