The Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF), General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has appointed Major General James Birungi as Uganda’s Military Attaché and Defence Advisor (DA) in Burundi.
General Birungi replaces Brigadier Simon Ochan, who has completed his tour of duty and will report back to the Joint UPDF Services Headquarters for reassignment, according to Colonel Chris Magezi, the CDF's Military Assistant.
Major General Birungi was, until April this year, the UPDF Chief of Defence Intelligence and Security (CDIS), swapping positions with Major General Richard Otto, who previously commanded the Mountain Infantry Division.
At the UPDF Mountain Infantry Division, based in Fort Portal, western Uganda, Gen. Birungi has been replaced by Brigadier Paul Muwonge.
According to Col. Magezi, Brigadier Muwonge has been elevated from his previous position as Deputy Commander in the same division.
Brigadier Muwonge, who recently accompanied the CDF on an official working trip to Kinshasa, DRC, now also assumes command of the ongoing Operation Shujaa, a joint operation with the DRC’s military forces (FARDC) to degrade and destroy the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) terrorist group operating in some parts of eastern DRC.
