The government has launched the Bugarama–Karweru Water Supply and Sanitation System in Kabale District, marking a major step toward improving access to clean and reliable water for communities in the region.

The project was officially commissioned at Bugarama Primary School by the Ministry of Water and Environment under the Climate-smart Water Infrastructure Project (CWIP). Officials said the initiative will address long-standing water shortages and strengthen sanitation services in Bugarama, Karweru, and surrounding areas.

Funded by the Government of Uganda, the project is being implemented through the Urban Water Supply and Sewerage Services Department, whose mandate includes expanding safe water systems across urban and semi-urban centres.

Vidas Engineering Services Company Ltd has been contracted to execute the construction works. The ministry said the contractor is expected to deliver infrastructure that meets national standards and supports long-term water security.

Once completed, the new system is projected to improve household water access, reduce waterborne diseases, and ease the burden on communities that have relied on unsafe or distant water sources.
