President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has called for unity and a renewed focus on development after the elections, as thousands gathered in Lira City for a thanksgiving celebration organised by leaders from the Lango sub-region.
The event, held at Lango College, drew large crowds who turned up to welcome the President following his victory. It was organised with support from Ambassador Joseph Ocwet, a native of the region.
Addressing the gathering, President Museveni thanked the people of Lango for their support and urged leaders to shift attention from politics to service delivery.
“Now that the campaigns and elections are over, let us focus on implementing government programmes that move our people out of poverty, improve infrastructure and fight corruption,” he said.

He also acknowledged the role played by various stakeholders, including cultural, political, business, and academic leaders, in supporting the National Resistance Movement (NRM).
Earlier, the President paid tribute to the family of Mzee Anthony Ocwet and Mrs. Carollin Akullu Ocwet, reflecting on Uganda’s past political challenges.
“Their family reflects part of our country’s difficult history in the 1960s and 1970s, when sectarian politics forced many resourceful Ugandans into exile,” he said.
He added that his government later addressed such injustices by reforming laws and promoting inclusivity. He cited Ambassador Joseph Ocwet’s service to Uganda as an example of restored opportunity.

The celebration also featured performances from top Ugandan musicians, including Jose Chameleone, Juliana Kanyomozi, and Eddy Kenzo, who entertained the crowd alongside local artists from the Lango sub-region.
Organisers described the event as both a victory celebration and a moment of gratitude, bringing together leaders and residents in a show of unity.
The gathering marks a transition from the election season to governance, with the President emphasizing the need to tackle poverty, strengthen infrastructure, and sustain the fight against corruption.
