The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) has opened specialised training for soldiers under its 5 Infantry Division aimed at addressing weaknesses that could cause problems during operations.
The special-to-arms course at the division’s training school in Labwordwong, Agago District, aims to strengthen military skills, build confidence and prepare soldiers for operational assignments.
The trainees belong to Intake 01/26-27. They completed basic military training at different schools on July 9, 2026, and now serve under 5 Division.
Opening the course, Deputy Division Commander Col Gai Fraser Mpadwa said the training formed part of the soldiers’ professional development.
“The purpose of the training is to correct weakness before they become problems during operations,” he said.
Mpadwa urged the soldiers to uphold UPDF values, learn from their instructors and gain the knowledge they need to stay safe during assignments. He also stressed discipline, alertness, physical fitness and teamwork.
“Take the training seriously and make maximum use of the training to operate effectively and safely,” he said.
He tasked instructors, led by Chief Instructor Lt Col Hakim Naseem, with delivering practical and realistic lessons that reflect the demands of modern warfare.
Mpadwa said soldiers must prepare to operate during the day and at night, across terrain ranging from mountains and deserts to woodlands.
“The level of training directly influences confidence, discipline and effectiveness during operations. Good soldiers are not only expected to carry weapons but to maintain them and operate effectively. Protect the civilians and relate with them well during operations,” he said.
Division Operations and Training Officer Col Peter Musherure, Division Artillery Commander Lt Col David Ntimba and 803 Motorised Infantry Brigade Operations Officer Lt Col Hassan Drago Bogere attended the opening.
