Uganda’s national U-17 football team, the Cubs, have written a new chapter in the country’s sporting history after edging out former world champions France 1–0 to qualify for the knockout stage of the FIFA U-17 World Cup 2025 in Qatar. This is the first time Uganda has advanced beyond the group stage at any FIFA World Cup.

The decisive moment came in the 18th minute when forward James Bogere calmly slotted home a precise assist from captain Hamuza Ssengoba at the Aspire Zone Complex in Doha. The early goal stunned the French, who had dominated possession but struggled to break Uganda’s disciplined backline.

France pressed for an equalizer, with Pierre Mounguengue shooting wide in the 31st minute and Christ Batola missing another close-range opportunity soon after. Uganda nearly doubled their lead just before halftime when Richard Okello forced a fingertip save from the French goalkeeper.

In the second half, the French intensified their attacks, but Uganda’s organized defense anchored by Ssengoba and Okello held firm. Tidiane Diarrassouba fired off target in the 68th minute, marking France’s last real chance as the Cubs resolutely protected their lead until the final whistle.

Road to the Knockouts

Uganda opened their campaign with a 2–1 loss to Canada, followed by a 1–1 draw with Chile, before the memorable victory over France sealed their spot in the Round of 32.

The Cubs’ breakthrough reflects years of structured investment by the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) in grassroots and youth football from school competitions and regional academies to national talent scouting programs.

Led by Head Coach Brian Ssenyondo, Uganda qualified for the global showpiece after winning the CECAFA U-17 Zonal Championship at Nakivubo Stadium, defeating Tanzania in the final. The team later impressed at the AFCON U-17 qualifiers, booking Uganda’s first-ever ticket to the FIFA World Cup in this category.

Coach Ssenyondo hailed his players’ focus and resilience, noting that their success was built on discipline and teamwork.

“The boys came here to compete, not just to participate. They have shown maturity and character throughout the tournament,” he said.

The victory over France has not only elevated Uganda’s profile in world football but also inspired belief that with proper investment, African youth teams can challenge traditional football powerhouses on the global stage.
