Uganda's Minister of State for Foreign Affairs (International Affairs), Henry Okello Oryem, met with the Japanese Ambassador to Uganda, H.E. Sasayama Takuya, on July 24, 2025, to strengthen bilateral relations and finalize Uganda’s preparations for the upcoming Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD IX).

The meeting, held at the Ministry Headquarters in Kampala, focused on Uganda’s participation in TICAD IX, which will take place in Yokohama, Japan, from August 20–22, 2025. Ambassador Sasayama congratulated Hon. Oryem on his recent win in the NRM primaries and emphasized Japan’s commitment to continued collaboration with Uganda.

Ambassador Sasayama requested Uganda’s official delegation list for TICAD IX, stressing the importance of early preparation. He also raised inquiries about Uganda’s current position on the Lock II phase of the JICA-supported road construction project.

Oryem reaffirmed Uganda’s unwavering position on the project, stating, “The Lock II phase remains a national priority.” He added that with oil production expected in the next two years, Uganda anticipates substantial GDP growth and increased infrastructure demand. “Uganda’s GDP will rise significantly over the next five years, with increased vehicle use and a better standard of living,” he said.

Ambassador Sasayama extended an invitation to Oryem to attend the ongoing Osaka Expo and Japan’s National Day celebrations on October 8, 2025. He also commended Uganda’s strong performance at the Green Expo, where Uganda ranked among the top three countries, following China and Lesotho.

The meeting reaffirmed the strong and evolving partnership between Uganda and Japan. Both parties expressed a shared commitment to mutual development and strategic cooperation through platforms such as TICAD.
