President Yoweri Museveni has granted an official burial to veteran playwright, actor and cultural icon Alex Edward Kabangala Mukulu, who died on August 15, 2026.
Presidency Minister Milly Babalanda announced that the National Organising Committee (NOC) was engaging with Mukulu’s family to prepare a state send-off scheduled for August 20, 2026, at Kijabijjo in Gayaza.
“Dear friends, I wish to inform you that the President of the Republic of Uganda, H.E. Gen. @KagutaMuseveni, has granted an official burial to the fallen statesman, Mr Alex Edward Kabangala Mukulu,” Babalanda said.
She added that the government’s condolences went to Mukulu’s family, friends, colleagues in the performing arts industry and Ugandans.
Mukulu, who died aged 72, was one of Uganda’s most influential figures in theatre and performing arts. He built a career as a playwright, actor, director and mentor, shaping Uganda’s drama industry for decades.
He was known for works that blended social commentary, humour and cultural themes while addressing issues affecting Ugandan society.
His death triggered tributes from artists, cultural leaders and public figures who described him as a pioneer who helped develop Uganda’s modern theatre scene.
Mukulu’s contribution extended beyond stage performances. He trained and inspired several generations of actors and writers while promoting local storytelling through theatre.
