The head of the Babiito clan, Prince Charles Akiiki Kamurasi, has announced that Prince Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma will use the regnal name King Edward Rukidi Nabongo I.
The Musuuga made the announcement during the final send-off of King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV at St John’s Cathedral in Fort Portal on Saturday, September 12, 2026.
An emotional Kamurasi told mourners that Tooro had a new king after days of uncertainty and disagreement over the succession.
He said the Babiito princes and princesses had met under his leadership and chosen Prince Edward as King Oyo’s successor.
Kamurasi said the clan followed Ugandan law and Tooro’s customs when selecting the new monarch. He urged the people of Tooro to remain peaceful and united despite the dispute surrounding the succession.
The announcement of Prince Edward as king had drawn objections from members of King Oyo’s immediate family.
