Ugandan scientists have achieved a breakthrough with two locally developed herbal medicines, Tazcov and Vidicine, proving safe and effective in clinical trials.

Minister for Science, Technology, and Innovation Dr. Musenero Monica announced the milestone, calling it a historic achievement for Uganda’s pharmaceutical industry. The trials, conducted by the Science, Technology, and Innovation Secretariat at the Office of the President (STI-OP), showed that both drugs outperform imported medicines in treating respiratory infections, including influenza A and B, Covid-19, and respiratory syncytial virus.

With clinical trials confirming their safety and effectiveness, Tazcov, developed by Busitema University, and Vidicine, produced by Kazire Health Products, will now be submitted to the National Drug Authority for certification. If approved, they will be the first Ugandan herbal medicines to receive such recognition, opening doors to both local and international markets.

Dr. Musenero highlighted the significance of this development, noting that it would reduce Uganda’s dependence on imported drugs and strengthen the economy. She emphasized that the success of Tazcov and Vidicine reflects the potential of Ugandan scientists and the benefits of investing in local innovation.

“This achievement positions Uganda as a leader in herbal medicine research and brings us closer to affordable, effective healthcare solutions,” she said.

The breakthrough marks a new era for Uganda’s science and technology sector, offering hope for further advancements in medical research and development.
