Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) troops deployed in South Sudan have carried out a physical training exercise that included a 20-kilometre route march and mountain climbing.
The exercise was conducted under the guidance of Brig Gen Anthony Lukwago Mbuusi, Joint Task Force Commander of Operation Mlinzi Wakimya.
Codenamed PIGUA UMANDE, it was led by battle group Commander Col Bernard Kashemeza. The training aimed to build endurance, physical fitness, teamwork, and leadership skills.
Brig Gen Mbuusi stressed the importance of such drills, saying routine physical training is not a formality or punishment but a core part of operational readiness. “These exercises preserve life and ensure mission success. They prepare your body and mind to face challenges as warriors,” he said.
The training is part of the UPDF’s ongoing efforts to maintain high operational efficiency and resilience in deployment areas.
The development comes after the Chief of Defence Forces, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba's recent visit to Juba where he interacted with the troops at their tactical headquarters.
The CDF also held high-level discussions with South Sudanese President Salva Kiir and South Sudan’s Vice President, Dr Benjamin Bol Mel.
During the visit, Gen Kainerugaba reaffirmed Uganda’s commitment to fostering stronger ties with South Sudan and also met his South Sudanese counterpart.
