Uganda Engages Electric Locomotive Manufacturer to Modernise Railway System

Ambassador Danny Ssozi, Deputy Head of Mission at the Uganda Embassy in Berlin, met Henrik Orrling, Vice President for Business Development at SKODA Group Headquarters in Plzen, Czech Republic.

SKODA Transportation, a leading European manufacturer of public transport vehicles, is based in Pilsen, Czech Republic. The company specialises in developing and producing electric locomotive components, coaches, metro trains, trams, and trolleybuses. SKODA is renowned for its engineering innovation, tradition, and commitment to sustainable urban mobility.

The visit, facilitated by Radek Jakubský, Vice President of the Czech Chamber of Commerce in Prague, was part of the Uganda Embassy Berlin’s Economic and Commercial Diplomacy programme. It aimed to interest SKODA in manufacturing rail auxiliary services and locomotives. The Uganda Embassy in Berlin is accredited to the Czech Republic.

The meeting focused on the renovation and upgrading of Uganda’s passenger railway infrastructure to support a fast-growing, modern economy. The Embassy team presented opportunities to build additional maintenance and training facilities for Uganda’s railway sector, offering a range of services that meet the latest standards of safety and comfort. The visiting Embassy team toured ŠKODA’s factory and production lines, showcasing their state-of-the-art technologies and innovations.

Amb. Ssozi invited SKODA Transportation International for an assessment visit to Uganda. Both sides agreed to sign an MoU, under which further discussions would proceed. In attendance on the Czech side were Ing. Vlastimil Vaclavik, Government Relations Director, Antonio Alamar Galan, Business Development Director, and Radek Jakubský. The Uganda delegation included Jessica Namuddu, Third Secretary, Mr. Ronald Mutebi, Commercial Diplomacy Assistant, and Kian Klauss, a consultant.
