The Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) has released the 2024 national examination timetable, with the introduction of new curriculum exams. This year, UNEB will conduct four sets of exams; Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) for New Lower Secondary Curriculum - (NLSC),  UCE (Transitional Exam - Old Curriculum), Primary Leaving Examination (PLE) and Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE).

The exams, which will run under the theme “Embracing Security and Holistic Assessment of Learners in a Dynamic Environment,” are set to take place across several dates. The timetable is as follows:

  • UCE (NLSC): October 11 to November 8, 2024
  • UCE (Transitional): October 11 to November 15, 2024
  • PLE: November 4 to 7, 2024
  • UACE: November 8 to December 6, 2024
UNEB is conducting four sets of exams; UCE (New Lower Secondary Curriculum - NLSC),  UCE (Transitional Exam - Old Curriculum), Primary Leaving Examination (PLE) and Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE).

Dan N. Odongo, UNEB's Executive Director, emphasized the importance of maintaining the integrity and security of the examinations while embracing a more holistic assessment approach. "We are committed to ensuring the integrity and security of our examinations," Odongo said.

He said the 2024 exams include both the New Lower Secondary Curriculum and a transitional examination for students under the old curriculum. This transitional exam provides an opportunity for candidates who missed the 2023 Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) exam to participate.

A total of 1,320,400 candidates are registered for the four exams (known as the "4Es"), reflecting a 7.8% increase in registration compared to last year. Female candidates make up 51.1% of the total. Odongo highlighted significant increases in candidature for the Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) and the Primary Leaving Examinations (PLE), with a 28.4% and 6.6% rise respectively.

UNEB warned of the severe consequences of exam malpractice. “Candidates, parents, and educators must familiarise themselves with the examination regulations and guidelines to avoid any issues,” said Odongo, stressing that involvement in malpractice could result in the cancellation of results and potential legal action.

"As UNEB prepares for the 2024 exams, all stakeholders; students, parents, and teachers are urged to collaborate in ensuring a smooth and successful examination process," Odongo said.
