Alupo Urges Universities to Embrace AI in Education

Vice President Jessica Alupo has emphasized the role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in modernizing education to produce graduates equipped for today's job market. Presiding over the 15th graduation ceremony at St. Lawrence University on February 20, 2025, where over 520 students received various qualifications, Alupo highlighted the necessity for educational institutions to integrate new technologies.

"To remain relevant, universities must constantly update their approaches, embrace new technologies, and equip students with the flexible skills demanded by the future workforce," Alupo stated.

Nyombi Thembo, Executive Director of the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC), noted the government's commitment to integrating AI into public programs, including education. "We recognize the critical role AI plays in driving technological and social change and are committed to providing an enabling environment for AI to flourish," he said.

Dr. Charles Masaba, Vice Chancellor of St. Lawrence University, detailed the institution's efforts to incorporate AI into its curriculum. "We are updating our curricula to include AI literacy, ensuring our graduates are equipped with the skills needed to thrive in an AI-driven world," Masaba explained.

The graduation ceremony, themed "Embracing Artificial Intelligence in Contemporary Higher Education," underscored the university's dedication to adopting AI technologies to enhance learning experiences and prepare students for future challenges.
