The Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) has directed all schools hosting examination centres to publicly display candidate registers for one month to allow parents, learners, and stakeholders to verify details ahead of the 2025 national exams.

UNEB spokesperson Jennifer Kalule said the registers must be displayed in conspicuous places at all examination centres and will also be accessible at district, municipal, and city education offices. The display period runs until October 10.

“The candidate’s register should be displayed in a conspicuous place at the school where the candidates are registered, and at the district headquarters respectively,” UNEB stated.

Kalule urged parents whose children study in schools without examination centres to confirm where their candidates have been registered and ensure their names appear on the lists.

The directive follows recurring cases where some learners discovered on the eve of examinations that they had not been registered. “Parents who have proof of paying registration fees but find their children missing on the register should immediately report the matter to UNEB,” Kalule said.

Under the revised UNEB Act, any person who collects registration fees and fails to remit them commits an offence. Upon conviction, the culprit faces a fine of up to Shs 40 million, imprisonment of up to 10 years, or both. The Act also requires the offender to refund the money and compensate affected candidates. Registered teachers found guilty face additional disciplinary action.

To ease verification, UNEB has also introduced an SMS service where parents and learners can confirm details by typing Reg, followed by the candidate’s full index number, and sending it to 6600.

Teachers, parents, and candidates are expected to carefully check bio-data, including index numbers, names, gender, date of birth, subjects, and photographs. Schools must correct discrepancies within the stipulated time using UNEB’s online amendment forms or by submitting formal requests with supporting documents such as national IDs or birth certificates.

According to UNEB, a total of 1,415,857 candidates have registered for the 2025 national examinations across the three levels. This marks a 6.8 per cent increase from 2024. Of these, 817,998 are for the Primary Leaving Examination (PLE), 431,856 for the Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE), and 166,464 for the Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE).
