The Ministry of Water and Environment has handed over two double-cabin vehicles to the Ministry of Education and Sports to enhance supervision and coordination of education and water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) programmes in Northern Uganda.
The vehicles were provided through the Water and Sanitation Development Facility–North (WSDF-North) in partnership with the European Union in Uganda, KfW Bankengruppe and CES, and are intended to support joint project implementation under the Gender for Development Uganda (G4DU) initiative.
The vehicles have been assigned to the Basic Education Department, specifically the Gender Unit and the WASH Hub, to facilitate field supervision and monitoring of gender-responsive and inclusive education programmes linked to improved WASH services.
Speaking at the handover ceremony held at the Ministry of Water and Environment headquarters in Luzira, Kampala, the Under Secretary for Finance and Administration, Ms. Nassuna Catherine, said the support would strengthen collaboration between the two ministries and improve oversight of ongoing projects.
The Ministry of Water and Environment is currently implementing the Climate Resilience and Water for Refugees and Host Communities Programme in Northern Uganda, funded under German Financial Cooperation with Uganda. The G4DU project is financed by the European Commission through KfW Bankengruppe, which also serves as the fund manager.
Through WSDF-North, the ministry is implementing the project on behalf of KfW Bankengruppe, with a focus on improving learning environments in schools. The programme involves construction of water and sanitation facilities, classroom blocks and teachers’ quarters in 199 schools across Northern Uganda, as well as establishment of a faecal sludge management facility.
Officials say the newly handed-over vehicles will improve coordination, monitoring and supervision of project activities, contributing to better education outcomes and strengthened WASH services in schools and host communities.
