Kabarole-George Kayondo Chance, the Senior Treasurer Mugusu Town Council in Kabarole district has been arrested over massive environmental degradation.

Kayondo was picked up from his office by police on Wednesday. He is accused of clearing Kahungere Wetland in Mugusu Town Council to plant Eucalyptus trees. Prior to the arrest, a team led by the Kabarole District Environmental Officer Eunice Kanyiginya had cleared Kayondo’s ten acres of Eucalyptus trees planted in the Wetland.

The officials who also included the Kabarole district Vice Chairperson Margaret Kihika and the District Police Commander Jamal Kanyesige accused Kayondo of adamantly clearing the natural vegetation to plant Eucalyptus trees in ignorance of warning notices from the district environmental office. Kayondo is now detained at Fort portal Police station.
