Dr. Frank Nabwiso, a respected political leader, scholar, and advocate for development in Uganda, passed away on Saturday, December 14, 2024, at Namirembe Hospital in Mukono. He was 83.

A former Member of Parliament for Kagoma County (2001–2006), Dr. Nabwiso was a prominent figure in Uganda’s political and academic circles. He was a staunch supporter of the opposition Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) and served on the party’s Special Elders’ Council at the time of his death.

Dr. Nabwiso’s influence extended beyond politics into education, research, and community development. His colleagues, friends, and political adversaries alike recognized him as a principled and incorruptible leader.

“He was a beacon of wisdom and a champion for development, whose tireless efforts uplifted countless lives,” said Alex Brandon Kintu, MP for Kagoma North Constituency.

Born into a politically active family, Dr. Nabwiso developed an early interest in governance and public affairs. His Lusoga news broadcasts in the 1960s inspired many, nurturing their political literacy and fostering civic awareness in Busoga and beyond.

Dr. Nabwiso’s academic achievements were remarkable. He earned a Ph.D. in Development Studies in 1976, which shaped his career and influenced many in Uganda and the wider region. He taught development studies to senior army officers and later represented an American university across Africa and the Middle East.

A man of integrity, Dr. Nabwiso held key leadership roles, including Director of the Uganda Export Promotion Council and the Uganda AIDS Information Centre. Many people noted that Dr. Nabwiso executed his duties with distinction and remained untainted by corruption allegations.

As a parliamentarian, he was a vocal advocate for the environment and cultural heritage. He notably opposed the construction of the Bujagali Dam, warning of its ecological and cultural consequences. Despite his minority position, he maintained his principled stance, earning respect for his dedication to community welfare.

In his later years, Dr. Nabwiso focused on research, delving into Christianity's impact on Busoga. His critical thinking and straightforward nature often set him apart, as noted by those who worked closely with him.

“Frank was a rare leader—frank, truthful, and unshakable in his convictions,” said a longtime colleague, highlighting his inability to compromise his values for political expediency.

Several people noted that Dr. Nabwiso's passing leaves a profound void in the Busoga region and Uganda at large. His legacy as a politician, educator, and advocate for progress will continue to inspire generations.

He is survived by his family, friends, and countless Ugandans whose lives he touched. As Busoga mourns the loss of one of its finest sons, the nation reflects on the enduring contributions of Dr. Frank Nabwiso—a leader whose integrity and vision remain a guiding light.
