The government of Germany has announced a donation of 5.5 million doses of the Johnson and Johnson COVID vaccine to Uganda.
This was revealed by H.E Matthias Schauer, the Ambassador of Germany to Uganda during his visit to State House Entebbe.
The German Ambassador led a delegation of investors who held a meeting with President Yoweri Museveni.
"I met a German Business delegation led by H.E Matthias Schauer, the Ambassador of Germany to Uganda. The delegation told me that the government of Germany has worked out a donation of 5.5million doses of the Johnson and Johnson COVID vaccine to Uganda. This is a HUGE boost," President Museveni said in a tweet.
The Ugandan leader however noted that Uganda is in the final stages of manufacturing its own vaccines so as the reliance on aid stops.
"...This is on top of the fact that we are in the final process of manufacturing our own vaccine so that we stop future dependency on donations. I, therefore, would like to thank the government of Germany and at the same time call upon our people to get vaccinated," Mr. Museveni said in a subsequent tweet.
It is believed that as more and more people are vaccinated, families and communities will be able to gradually return to a more normal routine after close to two years of lockdowns, restricted movement, and school closures among other Covid-19 induced inconveniences.
President Yoweri Museveni announced earlier that the economy will be opened in January 2022, urging eligible Ugandans to get vaccinated to avoid undoing the gains made against the pandemic that has ravaged the world.
