KCCA Set to Conduct House to House Inspections ahead of NAM, G77 Summits

As Kampala prepares to host the 19th Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) and Group of 77 (G77) + China Summits in January 2024, the Ministry of Kampala Capital City and Metropolitan Affairs announced an initiative to conduct house-to-house inspections.

The inspections set to commence on December 1 aim to ensure a modern, attractive, and sustainable Smart City in alignment with the city's vision.

Hajjat Minsa Kabanda, the Minister of Kampala Capital City and Metropolitan Affairs, revealed that the inspections will focus on key aspects crucial to the city's development.

These include cleanliness, proper waste disposal, building renovations, removal of illegal structures, installation of lighting, maintenance of green spaces, and adherence to construction site regulations.

In an official statement, Minister Kabanda emphasized the significance of compliance with city planning and environmental regulations.

Non-compliance, she warned, will lead to enforcement actions, in line with relevant laws and regulations, emphasizing the need for property owners, city operators, and the public to meet the outlined requirements by December 20, 2023, to avoid penalties.

The minister expressed gratitude for the positive response from property owners, particularly along Ggaba Road, who have already taken steps to enhance their buildings and frontages in anticipation of the inspections.

Under the Kampala Capital City Act of 2010, the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) is mandated to plan, construct, and maintain city infrastructure, including roads, physical planning, and development control.

The ongoing efforts to improve the city's infrastructure include the rehabilitation of city roads and drainages, beautification and landscaping projects, and the installation of streetlights at key locations.

Kabanda called upon all residents and property owners to actively support these efforts by undertaking activities such as cleaning, painting outer areas, installing security lighting, paving frontages, and participating in beautification projects to create a clean and green environment.

To ensure widespread compliance, KCCA issued a notice on November 9, 2023, informing the public of the upcoming inspections. Starting December 1, Division Town Clerks will conduct house-to-house inspections to enforce cleanliness, proper sanitation, waste disposal, building regulations, and adherence to other city guidelines.

Kabanda urged unity among city leadership, Members of Parliament, the Lord Mayor and the Authority, Division Mayors, City Commissioners, councilors, local council leadership teams, and the public.

The collective goal, she stated, is to organize the city for both the upcoming Summits and the overall development of the Capital City. Kampala's vision is clear: to be a vibrant, attractive, and sustainable city, with each person playing their part in keeping Kampala Smart.​
