The Ministry of Works and Transport has launched the construction of an access road to a new fertilizer plant in Kampiringisa, Mpigi District. This is aimed at boosting Uganda’s agri-industrial growth.
Musa Ecweru, the State Minister for Works, flagged off the works, describing the project as a strategic initiative guided by President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni to boost local production.
“This may appear a fairly low function but it is very significant," Ecweru said. "It is a milestone not just for the Kampiringisa community, but for the entire country’s agri-industrial transformation.”
The upcoming plant, operated by Intracom Fertilizers Ltd, will use cow dung as raw material, supplemented with nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium (NPK) to produce high-quality fertilizer for Ugandan farmers.
Uganda currently spends over $300 million annually on fertilizer imports, yet usage remains critically low at just 1.5 to 2 kilograms per acre compared to the recommended 50 kilograms. The new investment is expected to reduce import reliance, lower farming costs, and improve national food security.
The access road project is seen as crucial to facilitating the movement of raw materials and finished products, enhancing the factory’s operational efficiency once production begins.
The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to supporting infrastructure that unlocks economic opportunities and accelerates Uganda’s industrial growth.
