Joe Walker, known to many as Joe Beyanga, views road safety as more than just a campaign; it’s a personal mission sparked by a genuine concern for the lives lost on Uganda’s roads each year. What began as an idea to raise awareness through long-distance walks has grown into a national movement, influencing communities, shaping policy, and shifting attitudes towards road safety.

His advocacy journey began with the realisation that many road accidents in Uganda could be avoided through better road user behaviour, improved pedestrian infrastructure, and stricter enforcement of traffic laws. The urgency of his cause was reinforced by the 2022 Uganda Police Force annual crime report, which revealed alarming statistics: 21,473 people were involved in road traffic accidents, with 4,534 (21%) losing their lives instantly.

In 2022, Joe Walker took decisive action by embarking on his first long-distance road safety walk, covering 350 kilometres from Kampala to Bushenyi. The walk, despite the extreme weather, exhaustion, and logistical challenges, served as a rallying cry for collective responsibility in ensuring Uganda’s roads are safer. Every step he took was motivated by the knowledge that it could help save a life.

“Many people assume road safety is just the government's responsibility, but it affects all of us. Every time a boda boda rider speeds past traffic recklessly or a driver ignores a zebra crossing, lives are at risk. We all have a role to play,” says Joe Walker.

Coca-Cola Beverages Uganda (CCBU) has been a key partner in this mission, supporting Joe Walker’s initiative for four years as the official hydration partner for his road safety walks. This partnership goes beyond just providing hydration, it is a shared commitment to making Uganda’s roads safer.

Kirunda Magoola, Public Affairs, Communications, and Sustainability Director at CCBU, explains, “We believe that by supporting his movement, we are not just providing hydration but also fueling a cause that is making Uganda’s roads safer for everyone. His dedication aligns perfectly with our commitment to community well-being.”

Since 2022, Joe Walker’s advocacy has reached thousands of Ugandans, from boda boda riders and schoolchildren to policymakers and entire communities. His efforts have sparked meaningful change, such as increased awareness of pedestrian safety, greater community advocacy for zebra crossings, and safer walkways. There has also been stronger enforcement of road safety laws, particularly against speeding and reckless driving. Corporate and government engagement has grown, with partners like CCBU supporting long-term solutions.

As Joe Walker continues his mission, he hopes to see lasting policy changes that prioritise the safety of pedestrians and cyclists, alongside stricter enforcement of traffic laws. With partners like CCBU by his side, he remains confident that his journey is far from over.

Joe Walker’s walks are more than just a physical challenge, they are about changing attitudes, saving lives, and proving that one person’s commitment can spark a nationwide movement. Though Uganda’s roads remain hazardous, thanks to his tireless advocacy and strong partnerships, a safer future is within reach.
